Fumigation
Fumigation — the most effective method for eliminating hard-to-reach pests
Fumigation is the introduction of toxic gases into a sealed space, such as buildings, grain silos, containers, ship holds or rail wagons, so that the gas fills the entire volume evenly and destroys pests at all life stages.
This method is particularly suitable when pests cannot be reached with standard control techniques.

What is a fumigant?
A fumigant is a chemical substance that turns into a gas under specific temperature and humidity conditions, reaching a concentration high enough to eliminate pests.
Unlike fogging or liquid treatments, fumigants work at the molecular level, penetrating materials and evaporating completely after exposure.
International compliance and safety

Grain fumigation
Approximately 15% of grain and grain products are damaged or destroyed by pests. Fumigation is the most effective method for protecting grain during storage, loading and transit.
- grain weevil
- saw-toothed grain beetle
- confused and red flour beetles
- moths
- mites
How grain fumigation works
Aluminium phosphide or magnesium phosphide gases are used. They act through the pest’s respiratory system.
- grain is sealed with a special film
- exposure time: 7–21 days, depending on temperature
- gas concentration is measured during exposure
- fumigation is effective during storage, loading and transit
Methods
Fumigation of grain bins and silos
Fumigant application during loading
- fumigant is evenly distributed as grain is loaded into the silo
- multiple silos can be fumigated simultaneously
- requires additional time and energy for grain handling
Gas recirculation method
- the most effective and modern method
- gas fills the entire volume evenly
- economical, safe and highly effective
- requires silo modernisation to install the pipe system
Transit
In-transit fumigation
- professional risk assessment is required
- fumigation method must comply with the importing country’s requirements
- incorrect fumigant use may cause pesticide residues
- improper procedures may endanger worker health
- the fumigation company must have liability insurance
